What is intentional memory in an AI companion?

Short answer

Intentional memory means the system does not treat every conversation as permission to build a permanent profile. Long-term memories are saved because you ask, confirm, or deliberately keep them, and you can inspect, edit, pause, use less, or delete them later.

Memory should be a decision, not a side effect

A conversational companion benefits from remembering things that genuinely improve future conversations: a preference, an ongoing decision, the meaning attached to a song, or how you want to be challenged when you are stuck.

But remembering everything creates a different product. It turns continuity into accumulation. Intentional memory draws a line between the conversation you had and the smaller set of things you actually want carried forward.

Control matters after the memory is saved

Consent at the moment of saving is only part of the design. A useful memory system also lets you see what survived, correct it when the context changes, pause it when it stops being useful, or remove it entirely.

Xiara treats long-term memory as an editable part of the relationship. Conversation history can provide continuity, while durable memory remains something you can deliberately shape instead of a hidden dossier growing in the background.

  • Ask Xiara to remember something directly
  • Confirm or reject a memory suggestion
  • Edit or pause a memory later
  • Delete a memory when it no longer belongs
